Industry Overview

EVA Foam and Engineering
Thermoplastics for Footwear

A reference overview of polymer materials used in shoe uppers, soles, cushioning, structural components, and assembly.

👟

Midsole and Footbed Foaming

Compression-molded EVA midsoles and footbeds are made from closed-cell or blended EVA foam sheets. Melt strength, cell uniformity, and post-mold shrinkage determine whether cushioning stays consistent across a production lot. Footbed foams are usually softer and lower density than midsole foams, and footbed cycles are often run separately with a controlled cooling profile to limit distortion after demolding.

🛞

Outsoles and Wedge Units

Outsole compounds must balance abrasion resistance, grip, and flex fatigue at once. EVA and EVA-EVM blends dominate casual and sports footwear outsoles, while thermoplastic polyurethane and rubber blends are specified where oil, solvent, or high-wear resistance is required. Wedge units and heel blocks are frequently co-molded with the midsole to control the heel-to-toe transition.

🥾

Safety and Cold-Weather Footwear

Safety boots, waders, and winter footwear draw on a different material set: PA12 and PA66 for low-temperature impact toughness in eyelets, hooks, and clips; glass-fiber reinforced grades for shank plates and heel counters; and TPU or rubber for outsole chemical resistance. Selection here is driven by the declared protection and slip class rather than by cushioning targets.

🤝

Our Role

Jinsutong supplies EVA foam and sheet grades plus PA12, PA66, and PA46 structural grades for footwear makers in Wenzhou, Wenling, and the wider Yangtze River Delta. Whether you are qualifying a midsole formula, sourcing a structural component grade, or evaluating a domestic alternative to an imported resin, our business team supports sampling and validation.

Typical Applications

Where Footwear Polymers
Drive Comfort, Durability, and Safety

Reference application overview covering compression-molded cushioning, outsole wear, safety classification, and cold-weather impact performance.

Compression-Molded Cushioning

A typical running midsole is molded from a 45–60 mm EVA or EVA-blend foam sheet at roughly 150–180 °C under 5–15 MPa for 5–8 minutes. As-foamed density in the 0.15–0.25 g/cm³ range governs both cushioning and finished weight, and closed-cell content matters more than density alone for long-term durability.

Outsole Wear and Flex Fatigue

Outsole durability is normally reported as DIN abrasion volume or as flex-fatigue cycle count. Casual EVA outsoles typically sit in the 150–250 mm³ DIN abrasion range, while higher-wear duties move to TPU or rubber blends. Grip is a compound-design outcome (shore hardness plus filler), not a single-grade decision.

Safety Footwear Classification

Safety footwear typically combines a PA66 or PA12 toe cap and heel counter with a foamed midsole and an outsole chosen for the declared slip class (LRA, SRC, or oil-resistant SR). Component resin grade and glass-fiber content are specified separately, because both affect the declared protection class.

Cold-Weather and Sports Components

PA12 and PA66 retain impact toughness well below 0 °C, which is why winter and ski boots use them for hooks, eyelets, and buckle hardware where ABS-type plastics can crack. Liner foams combine EVA and PE for thermal insulation, while TPU provides the outer shell.

Why Choose Jinsutong

A Footwear Polymer Partner
for Yangtze River Delta Makers

EVA foam and sheet grades plus structural engineering thermoplastics — supporting sole makers, component suppliers, and brand-owned factories.

01

EVA Foam and Sheet Supply

We supply EVA foam sheet and general-purpose EVA grades for compression molding, plus lower-VA grades for outsole blending. Footwear programs pull in on a seasonal schedule, so we hold buffer stock for peak-season restocking rather than selling from stock to order.

02

Structural Grade Cross-Supply

PA66, PA12, and PA46 grades cover heel counters, shank plates, eyelets, hooks, and clips, so a footwear maker can consolidate two purchase streams — cushioning foams and structural components — into one supplier relationship.

03

Formula and Sampling Support

For midsole programs we coordinate sample sheets and trial batches for compression-molding validation on your line, and help evaluate domestic alternatives for imported EVA and PA grades — including shrinkage, density, and flex-fatigue comparison data.

04

Yangtze River Delta Logistics

The Wenzhou, Wenling, Taizhou, and Rui'an footwear clusters sit within roughly 3–5 hours truck reach of our Fengxian base. That supports same-week sample delivery, emergency restock, and bonded-warehouse export flows for Southeast Asian customers.

Case Studies

Footwear Application Case Studies

Fictional but realistic footwear scenarios. Material selection and processing conditions are the primary design constraints.

Case A

Compression-Molded EVA Midsole — Running Shoe

A 45 mm midsole was molded from an EVA foam sheet (unfaced density around 0.20 g/cm³) at 165 °C / 8 MPa for 6 minutes, with an insole skin added in the same cycle. As-molded part weight was 145 g per shoe. The key control point was post-mold shrinkage at 1.8%, measured across the footbed after 24 h conditioning.

Case B

Safety Boot — PA66 Structure and Outsole System

An S3-class safety boot used a glass-fiber reinforced PA66 shank plate and heel counter, an EVA midsole, and a TPU outsole selected for oil resistance. The declared SR (oil-resistant) slip class determined the outsole compound; the PA66 part was specified by required stiffness across the declared −30 °C to +80 °C service range.

Case C

Winter Boot — PA12 Hardware and Foamed Liner

A −25 °C winter boot moved its hooks, eyelets, and speed-lace hardware to PA12 after ABS-type parts cracked near −20 °C in the field. The boot pairs that hardware with an EVA/PE foamed liner for insulation and a TPU outer shell. Field returns fell to zero over the following winter season.
