Industry Overview

When Polymers Replace Metal
in Mechanical & Industrial Design

A reference overview of engineering plastics used in industrial machinery, fluid handling, chemical processing, and structural components where metals were traditionally used.

⚙️

Gears, Bearings & Wear Parts

Precision-molded POM (acetal) is the workhorse for low-load gears, bearings, and wear parts in office equipment, automotive interiors, and consumer appliances. For higher loads and temperatures, glass-fiber reinforced PA66 and PPA are used. PPS and PEEK are reserved for the most demanding high-temperature wear applications.

🛢️

Chemical & Fluid Handling

PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is the go-to polymer for aggressive chemical handling — strong acids, halogens, and organic solvents at elevated temperatures. HDPE and PP are used for less aggressive chemicals and lower temperatures. PPS and PPA bridge the gap where higher mechanical strength is needed alongside chemical resistance.

🔥

High-Temperature Structural Parts

PPS, PPA, PA46, and PEI are the workhorses for under-hood automotive, electrical, and industrial applications where continuous use temperatures exceed 150 °C. Glass-fiber and mineral-filled grades are used to maintain stiffness and dimensional stability across the operating temperature range.

Typical Applications

Where Industrial Polymers
Replace Metal and Drive Innovation

Reference application overview covering precision gears, chemical-resistant housings, fluid handling systems, and high-temperature structural parts.

Precision Gears & Bearing Cages

POM (Delrin 100, Hostaform C 9021) and PA66 (Zytel 70G33HSL) are the workhorse materials for low-to-medium load gears, bearings, and bearing cages. For high-temperature applications, PA46 (Stanyl TW341) and PPA (Amodel A-1133) provide the required heat resistance while maintaining low wear rates.

Chemical Process Equipment

PVDF (Kynar 740, Solef 6010) is the standard polymer for pump housings, valve bodies, pipe linings, and chemical storage tanks handling aggressive media (strong acids, halogens, organic solvents) at temperatures up to 140 °C. PPS and PPA serve in applications requiring additional mechanical strength.

Under-Hood Automotive (Non-Engine)

Glass-fiber reinforced PA66, PPA, and PPS are used for air intake manifolds, charge air coolers, radiator end tanks, and thermostat housings. Continuous use temperatures of 150–200 °C are typical, with brief peaks to 230 °C. PA46 (Stanyl) bridges to even higher temperatures for bearing cages and thrust washers.

Water Treatment & Fluid Handling

HDPE, PP, and PVDF are the standard materials for water treatment, desalination, and chemical fluid handling. PVDF is preferred where high purity and chemical resistance are required (semiconductor wet process, pharmaceutical). For hot water and steam service, PPS and PPA provide extended temperature capability.

Case Studies

Industrial Application Case Studies

Fictional but realistic industrial scenarios. Mechanical load, temperature, and chemical exposure are the primary design constraints.

Case A

Water Pump Impeller — PA66 Glass-Fiber Replacement of Brass

A 1.5 kW domestic water pump replaced a brass impeller with 30% glass-fiber reinforced PA66 (Zytel 70G33HSL). The polymer impeller reduced part cost by 60% and pump weight by 45%, with 1×10⁷ cycle fatigue life in cold water (5–60 °C) and 1000h hot water (90 °C) aging. Production: 2 million units/year.

Case B

Chemical Pump Housing — PVDF for HCl Service

A magnetic-drive chemical pump used a PVDF (Kynar 740) housing for 32% HCl service at 60 °C continuous. Compared to the previous PP housing, PVDF extended service life from 3 months to 18+ months with no observed corrosion, swelling, or cracking. Production: 5,000 pumps/year for chemical process customers.

Case C

Under-Hood Turbo Resonator — PPS for Sustained Heat

A 1.5 L turbocharged gasoline engine's air-intake resonator used 40% glass-fiber reinforced PPS (Torelina A604). The part operates continuously at 200 °C with peaks to 240 °C, withstands 1000h thermal cycling (-40 to 200 °C), and replaced a metal resonator with 30% weight savings. Production: 200,000 units/year.
