Industry Overview

High-Performance Polymers
for Modern Packaging

A reference overview of engineering plastics used in flexible packaging, multilayer extrusion, lamination, vacuum skin packaging, and retort food packaging.

📦

Multilayer Film Extrusion

Modern packaging films are typically 5–9 layer co-extruded structures combining a structural polyethylene outer layer, an EVOH barrier layer for oxygen and aroma protection, and an EAA or EMAA tie resin layer that bonds the dissimilar polymers together. Proper tie-layer selection and extrusion line tuning are critical for interlayer adhesion and downstream converting performance.

🥩

Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP)

EMAA (ethylene-methyl acrylic acid copolymer) is the workhorse top web for vacuum skin packaging of fresh meat, fish, and cheese. The high melt strength and deep-draw thermoforming behavior of EMAA allow thin-gauge films (60–100 μm) to conform tightly to irregular product shapes, extending refrigerated shelf life by 2–4× compared to traditional overwrap.

🫙

Retort & Aseptic Packaging

Retort pouches and aseptic carton packaging require multilayer structures that can survive 121–135 °C sterilization temperatures while maintaining oxygen barrier performance. EVOH provides the barrier, while specially formulated PP or PE outer layers provide the heat resistance. Our portfolio includes dedicated retort-grade EVOH (e.g. Soarnol DC3203) and high-temperature tie resins.

🤝

Typical Applications

Where Packaging Polymers
Enable Modern Food Protection

Reference application overview covering high-barrier multilayer films, vacuum skin packaging, retort pouches, and dairy aseptic packaging.

Aluminum Composite Lamination (Tetra Pak-style)

EAA grades (Nucrel 0910HS, Nucrel 2806) serve as the tie layer bonding polyethylene to aluminum foil in carton-style packaging. The EAA aluminum bond strength is critical for shelf-stable products like UHT milk, fruit juice, and wine. Typical peel strength: 5–8 N/15mm.

Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP)

EMAA top web (Escor 5200) over an EVOH-barrier bottom tray. The EMAA film is heated to ~120 °C and vacuum-formed over fresh meat, fish, or cheese placed on the bottom tray. The result is a tight, transparent skin that extends refrigerated shelf life 2–4× and improves product presentation.

Retort Pouches (Ready-to-Eat Meals)

Multilayer structures (PET / Al foil / retort-grade EVOH / PP) survive 121–135 °C sterilization for ready-to-eat meals, pet food, and seafood. Soarnol DC3203 and EVAL E171B are the primary barrier choices, with PP outer layers providing heat resistance.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)

EVOH barrier films maintain controlled O₂/CO₂ atmospheres for fresh-cut produce, salads, and prepared foods. Combined with proper gas flushing and tray design, MAP extends refrigerated shelf life 2–7 days while preserving color and texture.

Case Studies

Packaging Application Case Studies

Fictional but realistic packaging scenarios. Material selection and processing conditions are the primary design constraints.

Case A

Aseptic Carton — Tetra Pak-style Aluminum Lamination

A 1 L UHT milk carton used a 6-layer structure (PE / paperboard / EAA Nucrel 0910HS / Al foil 9 μm / EAA / PE) extruded at 280 m/min. EAA 9.5% acrylic acid content provided 7.2 N/15mm aluminum peel strength. Production: 500 million cartons/year with 0.3% delamination defect rate.

Case B

Meat Vacuum Skin Packaging — EMAA Top Web

A fresh pork VSP tray used ExxonMobil Escor 5200 EMAA top web (80 μm) over an EVOH-barrier bottom tray (PE/EVOH/PE). The EMAA top web was heated to 120 °C and vacuum-formed over the meat. Shelf life: 14 days at 4 °C vs 5 days for traditional overwrap. Production: 50,000 trays/day.

Case C

Retort Pet Food Pouch — High-Barrier Multilayer

A 500 g retort pet food pouch used a 4-layer structure (PET 12 μm / Al foil 7 μm / Soarnol DC3203 EVOH 10 μm / PP 70 μm) processed at 125 °C retort for 30 minutes. The retort-grade EVOH maintained oxygen barrier performance (0.4 cc/m²·day) post-sterilization. Shelf life: 24 months ambient.
