Industry Overview

Low-Dk / Low-Df Polymers
for High-Frequency Electronics

A reference overview of engineering plastics used in 5G infrastructure, mmWave antenna modules, AI server interconnects, and high-speed optical transceivers.

📡

Why LCP for 5G

Liquid crystal polymer (LCP) is a high-performance, highly ordered thermoplastic with very low dielectric constant (Dk < 3.0) and very low dissipation factor (Df < 0.005 at 10 GHz) in typical glass-fiber reinforced grades. Its low moisture absorption, high heat deflection temperature, and excellent flow in thin-wall sections make it the material of choice for SMT connectors and high-frequency antenna substrates operating at sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequencies.

🧠

AI Server & Datacom

AI accelerator cards and high-speed switches place extreme demands on connector polymers. High-flow LCP and PPA grades are used for board-to-board connectors, high-speed sockets (PCIe Gen5/Gen6, 112 / 224 Gb/s signalling), and optical-module housings where dimensional stability and dielectric performance must be maintained across the full operating temperature range.

5G mmWave & Antenna-in-Package

Beyond connectors, low-Dk / low-Df LCP grades are being qualified for antenna substrates and antenna-in-package (AiP) modules in 5G mmWave handsets and small-cell infrastructure. PPA and PPS serve complementary roles in RF front-end housings and thermal management structures.

Case Studies

Application Case Studies

Fictional but realistic 5G/AI electronics scenarios. Frequency and SMT process are the primary design constraints.

Case A

Smartphone SMT Connector — LCP Ultra-Thin-Wall

A flagship smartphone SMT connector (0.15 mm wall thickness, 0.4 mm pitch, SMT reflow 260 °C peak) used Celanese Vectra A130 (LCP 30% GF). LCP extreme flow filled the ultra-thin walls; high HDT (270 °C) withstood reflow without blistering. Production: 100M+ units/year with < 50 ppm defect rate.

Case B

5G mmWave Antenna Substrate — LCP Low-Df

A 28 GHz 5G mmWave antenna module substrate used Celanese Vectra E130i (LCP 30% GF, low Df 0.003-0.005 at 10 GHz). Low Df preserved signal integrity; high Tg (no Dk shift up to 150 °C) maintained antenna performance under operating temperature. Module size: 8 × 12 mm with 4-element antenna array.

Case C

AI Server High-Speed Socket — PPA SMT Reflow

An AI server GPU socket (224-pin BGA, SMT reflow 260-280 °C peak, sustained 110 °C operating) used DuPont Zytel HTN 51G35HSLR (PPA 35% GF, laser-markable). PPA was selected over PPS for tighter dimensional tolerance and over LCP for cost. Insert-molded with high-conductivity copper contacts.

SMT Process

SMT Reflow & Process
Considerations for LCP / PPA

Process notes for surface-mount assembly of high-frequency polymer connectors, sockets, and housings — covering reflow profile, moisture management, mold design, and regrind practice.

🌡️

Reflow Profile

LCP and PPA both support lead-free reflow profiles with peak temperatures of 260–280 °C. The thermal soak zone (150–200 °C) should be held 60–90 seconds to ensure uniform temperature across large multi-pin connector arrays. Excessive peak temperature (> 290 °C) or extended time above 250 °C can cause polymer degradation and blistering, especially in PPA grades with high glass-fiber content. For double-side SMT with bottom-side LCP connectors, run the bottom side first at lower peak (≤ 260 °C) to protect the first-pass parts.

💧

Moisture Management

LCP has moisture absorption below 0.1% and is largely insensitive to humidity during reflow — it can be processed without pre-drying in most cases. PPA absorbs 0.6–0.9% moisture and must be dried before processing — typically 4–6 hours at 120 °C in a desiccant dryer, then molded within 1–2 hours to avoid re-absorption. Improperly dried PPA will show voids, splays, or surface bubbles after reflow. PEI requires similar drying discipline (4 hours at 150 °C).

🔧

Mold Design

LCP's highly ordered molecular structure produces anisotropic shrinkage that can cause warpage in large or unbalanced parts. Use balanced gate locations, uniform wall thickness, and consider glass-fiber orientation effects — fiber orientation in the connector pin cavity direction can differ by 0.1–0.3% from the transverse direction. PPA has more isotropic shrinkage and is generally easier to mold to tight tolerances. For ultra-thin-wall LCP connector designs (0.10–0.20 mm wall), gate location and runner balance are critical to avoid short-shot and weld lines.

♻️

Regrind & Recycled Content

LCP regrind from sprues and runners can be reused up to 20–30% without significant property loss, provided the regrind is dried and free of contamination. PPA and PPS are less forgiving — regrind ratios are typically capped at 10–15% for high-frequency applications where dielectric consistency matters. For mmWave antenna substrates and 224 Gb/s AI server sockets, most processors keep regrind below 10% to maintain tight dielectric tolerance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from electronics procurement and design engineering teams sourcing 5G and AI high-frequency polymers.

Q1

What LCP grade for 28 GHz mmWave antenna substrate?

For 28 GHz mmWave antenna substrates, choose a low-Df LCP grade (Df < 0.005 at 10 GHz, glass-fiber reinforced 30%). Ticona Vectra E130i and Celanese Zenite 6330 are widely qualified. Verify with vector network analyzer (VNA) measurements of dielectric constant and loss tangent at your operating frequency, not just the 1 GHz datasheet value. For 39 GHz and higher, consider LCP film substrates with controlled thickness to keep insertion loss < 0.5 dB/cm.

Q2

LCP vs PPA for AI server high-speed sockets?

LCP is preferred where the thinnest walls, tightest pitch, and highest operating frequency (PCIe Gen5/Gen6, 112/224 Gb/s signalling) are needed. PPA (DuPont Zytel HTN 51G35HSLR, Solvay Amodel A-1133) is preferred where dimensional tolerance, laser-marking contrast, and total cost of ownership are critical. Many AI accelerator card sockets use PPA rather than LCP because PPA molds to tighter tolerances and costs 30–50% less per part. For mixed designs, the SMT connector body can be PPA and the inner high-speed signal pins can be insert-molded LCP.

Q3

Can LCP be used as a rigid PCB substrate?

Modified LCP films are used as flexible PCB substrates for high-speed signal traces and antenna structures — particularly for USB 3.2, HDMI 2.1, and 5G mmWave antenna flex. However, for rigid PCB panels, the dominant materials remain modified epoxy (FR-4, high-Tg FR-4, low-loss FR-4), modified polyimide, and PPE/PPO. LCP excels in SMT connector bodies, AiP modules, and flexible substrates — not in large rigid PCB panels where CTE, multilayer lamination, and via reliability dominate.

Q4

What's the lead time for LCP grades from China?

Spot lead time for standard LCP grades (Vectra A130, E130i, T130, Zenite 6330, Sumikasuper E5008) is typically 4–8 weeks from China-based masterbatch distributors and traders. Contract pricing and framework agreements can secure 2–4 week lead times for high-volume programs. Emergency small-quantity orders can sometimes be filled in 1–2 weeks, but at significant price premium (15–30% above contract). For new grade qualification, add 8–12 weeks for initial sample coordination.

Q5

Is there a China-domestic LCP alternative?

Domestic Chinese LCP production has matured significantly since 2020. Grades from Kingfa (KF-LCP series), Shanghai Pret Composites (PRET LCP), and Wuxi Shunma are used in some lower-frequency applications (SMT connectors at sub-6 GHz, FPC substrates). For mission-critical 5G mmWave and AI server high-frequency applications, imported grades (Ticona, Polyplastics, Sumitomo, Celanese) remain the safer choice. Discuss with our business team if you're evaluating domestic alternatives for specific applications — we can provide comparison samples and qualification support.
