Industry Overview

EVA as the Dominant
PV Encapsulation Polymer

A reference overview of polymer materials used in crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules and adjacent balance-of-system components.

☀️

Encapsulation Role

In crystalline silicon PV modules, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is the most widely used encapsulant. Crosslinkable EVA films are laminated between the front glass, the cells, and the backsheet, providing optical coupling, mechanical cushioning, and electrical insulation. The vinyl acetate (VA) content of solar-grade EVA is typically controlled in the 28–33% range, which balances flexibility, adhesion, and crosslink density under lamination conditions.

🧪

Module Reliability

The choice of EVA grade affects lamination cycle time, crosslink density, and long-term module performance under accelerated aging tests such as IEC 61215 damp-heat and UV exposure. Most high-volume module manufacturers use either conventional fast-cure EVA grades or high-clarity UV-cut grades for double-glass bifacial modules.

🔌

BOS Polymers

Beyond EVA encapsulation, the broader solar supply chain also uses PA66, PPA, and PPS for junction box housings, backsheet inner layers, and solar-tracker structural components. EVOH occasionally appears in transparent high-barrier backsheet constructions. For inverter housings, flame-retardant PA66 and EMC-grade PPS are common in commercial-scale systems.

🤝

Our Role

Jinsutong supplies the full EVA encapsulation grade portfolio alongside complementary engineering plastics (PPS, PA66, PPA) used across the solar value chain. Our business team can advise on grade selection based on lamination process parameters, end-application (single-glass vs. double-glass, bifacial, building-integrated PV), and regional regulatory requirements.

Typical Applications

Where Our Polymers
Serve the Solar Value Chain

Reference application overview covering module encapsulation, backsheet construction, junction box components, and balance-of-system hardware.

Single- & Double-Glass Module Encapsulation

Crosslinkable EVA films (typical VA 28–33%, MFI 15–30 g/10min) are laminated between the front glass, the cells, and the backsheet or rear glass, providing optical coupling, mechanical cushioning, and electrical insulation. The grade selection depends on lamination cycle time and the desired crosslink density.

Bifacial Module Encapsulation

High-clarity, UV-transmitting EVA grades (or POE alternatives) are used in bifacial modules where the rear side also receives light. Optical clarity, UV stability, and PID-resistance are the key selection criteria for rear-side encapsulants in bifacial and building-integrated PV (BIPV) modules.

Junction Box Potting & Backsheet Adhesion

Lower-VA EVA grades (15–25%) and EAA-based tie layers are used in junction box potting compounds and as inner adhesive layers in multilayer backsheet constructions, where they bond PET, fluoropolymer (PVDF / PVF), and aluminum layers for long-term weatherability.

Tracker & Mounting Components

PA66 GF30 / GF35 and PPA grades are widely used for solar-tracker bearings, drive housings, torque-tube supports, and connector bodies that require weatherability, UV resistance, and long-term fatigue performance under outdoor installation and wind loading.

Case Studies

Application Case Studies

Fictional but realistic application scenarios based on industry trends and publicly available data. Customer and project names are illustrative only — confirm specific project details with our business manager.

Case A

5 GW TOPCon Module Manufacturer — EVA/POE Dual-Stack

A leading Tier-1 module manufacturer transitioned its TOPCon product line from single-EVA to a dual-EVA/POE stack in 2024. The change required lamination temperature adjustment from 145 °C to 155 °C and reformulation of the crosslinker package. After 12 months of field exposure, PID-related degradation was reduced from 3% to < 0.5% per year, justifying the 25% cost premium for the POE layer.

Case B

100 MW Distributed Rooftop — Standard Crosslinkable EVA

A distributed solar installer standardized on 28% VA crosslinkable EVA films for all single-glass monofacial modules in 2023. The single-grade sourcing strategy reduced inventory complexity by 40% and procurement lead time by 2 weeks compared to the previous three-grade system. Field performance over 24 months matched the previous multi-grade approach within 0.2% efficiency degradation.

Case C

Bifacial Module Maker — UV-Cut EVA HP-2835

A bifacial module manufacturer adopted Hanwha EVA HP-2835 (28% VA, 35 MI, UV-cut) for the front-side encapsulation of dual-glass modules. The UV-cut formulation reduces UV transmission to the cells by 60% compared to standard EVA, extending module life in high-UV environments by an estimated 3-5 years based on accelerated aging tests.
